Six Mistakes People Make With Sofa Support Boards

1. Measuring the cushions

Cushions hang over the frame by an inch or two all round, so measuring them gives you a number bigger than the space the board actually sits in.

Do this instead: get the cushions out and measure the bare seat base. That is the surface the board rests on, so that is the measurement that matches you to the right size.

2. Rounding up when you're stuck between sizes

It feels like the safe choice. It's the opposite way round. A board that sits a little inside the seating area is exactly where you want it: fully on the seat base, hidden under the cushions, spreading your weight evenly across the whole seat.

Do this instead: round down on both numbers. If you're right on a boundary, send us the numbers and we'll confirm it before you order.

3. Expecting it to fix a broken frame

A support board rebuilds a seat base that's gone soft. It does nothing for a cracked frame or a snapped spring, and laying one over structural damage just hides it for a while.

Do this instead: rock the sofa and lift a front corner before you buy anything. If it twists or creaks badly, the frame is your problem.

4. Cutting or trimming it

Every so often someone decides to trim a board down. That wrecks the fabric wrap, leaves raw edges against your upholstery, weakens the panel, and voids both the warranty and your right to send it back.

Do this instead: the panels are meant to adjust. Close the gaps between them to bring the width in. If it still isn't the match you wanted, you have thirty days to swap it, and we'll help you land on the right one.

5. Putting it on top of the cushions

Looks obvious written down. Happens more than you'd think. The board goes under the cushions, resting on the seat base. Never between you and the cushion.

Do this instead: cushions out, board down, cushions back.

6. Expecting a soft sofa to turn into a firm one

A support board stops you sinking past the cushion. It doesn't make the cushion itself denser. Your cushions still do all the softness.

If your complaint is "I sink too far and it's a struggle to get up," a board sorts that. If it's "the foam's gone flat and lumpy," that's a cushion problem and new inserts are what you're after. Some sofas need both.

Do this instead: press the bare seat base with your hand. Sinks easily? Board. Firm, but the cushion still collapses? Foam.
