How to Make an Old Sofa More Comfortable Without Tools

All of it undoes in a minute

No screws, no glue, nothing you can't reverse. Roughly in order of how much difference each one makes.

1. Put something solid under the cushions

If you sink too far when you sit down, the seat base under your cushions has gone soft. A rigid board laid across it gives them a firm surface again.

Biggest change on this list by a long way, because it deals with what actually failed instead of working around it. About a minute to fit, under a hundred dollars, and it lifts straight back out if you change your mind.

2. Rotate everything

Seat cushions, back cushions, the lot. We all sit in the same spot every evening and compress the same bit of foam. Rotating spreads that around.

Free, two minutes, and it genuinely helps on a sofa that isn't too far gone. Once a month is about right.

3. Fix the depth, not just the firmness

Plenty of modern sofas are simply too deep for the people sitting in them. If your feet don't reach the floor comfortably, or your lower back never actually touches the backrest, no amount of cushion work is going to make it comfortable.

A firm bolster or a couple of dense cushions behind your lower back shortens the effective depth. Sounds like a compromise. Makes a real difference for anyone under about five foot six.

4. Sort out the arm you lean on

Most of us have a side. A firm cushion on that arm turns a hard wooden edge into something you can lean against for two hours without noticing.

5. Deal with cushions that creep forward

Cushions sliding forward every evening are usually skating on a slick seat base. Non-slip rug underlay cut to size will stop it. So will a fabric-covered support board, since fabric grips where a bare frame doesn't.

6. Throw something over the worn patch

Not a fix, but the seat you always use is the one that looks tired first. A folded throw evens out the look and adds a bit of padding while it's there. Costs almost nothing and changes how the whole room reads.

7. Move it away from the radiator

Heat and direct sun dry out foam and fade fabric faster than sitting on it ever will. If your sofa has spent five years next to a radiator or parked in a sunbeam, that's part of why it aged the way it did.

Being honest about the order

Two through seven make a tired sofa nicer to live with. Number one is the only one that addresses why it got tired in the first place.

So if you sit down and go further than you meant to, start there. If the seat height is fine and it's everything else bothering you, the rest of the list will get you a long way for very little money.
